To hell with that phony, bastardized version of the Harlem Shake… “twerking” is the dance craze that has the streets on lock. If you don’t know what twerking is, you probably go to bed at 8pm and yell at kids to “get off your lawn.” In brief, twerking is a provocative dance where young ladies do a lot of gyrating, rump-shakin’, splits and handstands. “Twerk teams” try to outdo each other in homemade videos posted at classy online venues like WorldstarHipHop. Miley Cyrus recently stoked the flames of its popularity by twerking in a unicorn costume, which is ironic since she has a pancake-booty. But I guess twerking isn’t about the amount of ass, it’s all in the rhythm.
Just the other day, 33 students from Scripps Ranch High School in San Diego were suspended and banned from their prom & graduation ceremony, after a video of them twerking was posted on YouTube. The photo above is a screen shot of the now-infamous video.

Dozens of students at Scripps Ranch High School in San Diego were suspended after a video of them “twerking” was uploaded to YouTube. Now, the group has to appeal to win back the right to attend prom and walk at graduation, NBC 7 San Diego reported. The 33 students involved in the video, which was reportedly recorded on school-owned equipment, were suspended through the end of the week. According to NBC 7, the student also used school editing equipment to add music with vulgar lyrics to the video and upload it to YouTube.
“The seniors involved are on senior review and have to ask for their prom and graduation back in front of a panel,” one of the teenagers involved in the incident told NBC 7. The appeals process is outlined on the San Diego Unified School District’s website.
The Scripps Ranch High School student handbook prohibits “verbal, visual, or physical conduct of a sexual nature made by someone from or in the educational setting.”
San Diego Unified school board member Scott Barnett told the News that he has asked that the matter be discussed during the board’s executive session on Tuesday.
“As a father of two teenaged daughters in one of our different high schools, I take issues of proper conduct and discipline very seriously,” he said. “At the same time, I need to be satisfied that the consequences of these actions are reasonable and proportionate.”
People have taken to the #FreeTheTwerkTeam hashtag on Twitter to show their support for the students.
“This whole twerk team thing is basically like modern day Footloose #freethetwerkteam #SRHSTwerkTeam,” one user wrote.
“They may not be able to walk during graduation … but they didn’t say they couldn’t twerk across the stage! #FreeTheTwerkTeam,” another supporter tweeted.
It’s absolutely retarded (uh, I mean the “R-word”) to ban these kids from their prom and graduation ceremony over something like this. These principals and board members act like they were never carefree young-dumb-and-full-of-cum teenagers. The prom and High School graduation are once-in-a-lifetime events. To strip them of that experience over a single mistake that really didn’t hurt anyone is cruel and unusual punishment.
Now that the dominoes of discipline have fallen, don’t be surprised if the government declares a “War On Twerking.” We all know how petty our government can be and how much they love to declare war on stuff. Since marijuana is slowly becoming legal, they need something else to demonize and this could be the next witch hunt… especially since young suburban white girls do it too. If Miley Cyrus ever gets arrested and has to do a PSA as punishment, she’ll have to renounce the dance (“Kids, just say no to twerking”). This war will be enforced by the Patriot Act and paid for with our taxes. SWAT teams will raid houses where they suspect twerking… well, in the hood anyway. I’ve seen this movie before, people.
